The best places to stay, where to eat lunch, dinner and Swedish <em>fika<\/em>. What to do with your kids. My honest recommendation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wish I could present my new hometown as a tourist hub to attract more people here, but I&#8217;m honest: While Kristianstad is a rather nice town to live in, I wouldn&#8217;t recommend it as the main target for your well earned vacation. <\/p><div id=\"hejsw-2601159832\" class=\"hejsw-content-sfa-desktop-and-tablet-1 hejsw-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-left: auto;margin-right: auto;text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3eu3RS1\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Book about Sweden - How to be Swedish\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/hejsweden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HtbS-ad-main-220420-1-1.png\" alt=\"Book about Sweden - How to be Swedish\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/hejsweden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HtbS-ad-main-220420-1-1.png 900w, https:\/\/hejsweden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HtbS-ad-main-220420-1-1-800x600.png 800w, https:\/\/hejsweden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HtbS-ad-main-220420-1-1-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/hejsweden.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/HtbS-ad-main-220420-1-1-768x576.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" class=\"no-lazyload\" width=\"900\" height=\"675\"   \/><\/a><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long to visit Kristianstad?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;d say, you can experience Kristianstad&#8217;s best places in one, at most two, full days and then continue with exploring \u00c5hus, \u00d6sterlen or Lund instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is worth stopping by though, if you travel around Southsweden or are on the way to other locations. For example, I consider V\u00e4xj\u00f6, Kalmar or Halmstad more &#8220;vacation-worthy&#8221; than <em>K-town<\/em>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get there?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It take only 1.5 hours by train, with SJ \u00d6resundst\u00e5g, from Copenhagen Airport. One hour from Malm\u00f6. Are you in Lund and want to visit Kristianstad? It takes only about 50 minutes to go there by car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Kristianstad-folks say where you should go <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Kristianstad you find a few brown sightseeing-signs saying <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sv.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sveriges_l%C3%A4gsta_punkt\">l\u00e4gsta punkten<\/a><\/em>, Sweden&#8217;s lowest point. I went there. And unless you have already spent three weeks in Kristianstad and don&#8217;t know what to discover next, I&#8217;d say, skip it! It&#8217;s probably the worst &#8220;sightseeing&#8221;-location of the town. No stunning view (of course), no store to buy <a href=\"https:\/\/hejsweden.com\/en\/swedish-chocolate-balls-recipe-chokladbollar\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8783\">chocolate balls<\/a> or lowest point merchandising. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only thing you gain from going there is that you can say you &#8220;have been at the lowest point in Sweden!&#8221; Which &#8211; if you&#8217;re chatting at a <a href=\"https:\/\/hejsweden.com\/en\/nightlife-guide-sweden-party\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5128\">Swedish party<\/a> &#8211; can only be a fun thing to say if you also have been on Sweden&#8217;s highest point, Kebnekaise. But you haven&#8217;t been climbing Kebnekaise yet and you certainly have better sense of humor than that. What you miss out on is a place in a small birch forest with a sign saying you&#8217;re 2,32m under sea level &#8230; that&#8217;s it. There are far better places to spend you time&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit \u00c5hus &#8211; it&#8217;s close to Kristianstad <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within 20 minutes by car you enter the small town of \u00c5hus. Which is where I use to go whenever I have visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best of \u00c5hus <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are my favourite places in \u00c5hus &#8211; great for a day or two. Go to these locations: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Old town with a small square where you can buy <em>Ottos glass<\/em> (<em>glass<\/em> means <em>ice cream<\/em> in Swedish), a locally produced ice cream, in a kiosk. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The harbour with <em>Glassb\u00e5ten<\/em>, &#8220;ice cream boat&#8221; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>T\u00e4ppet, a beach with a special looking tree, right next to the popular <em>brygga<\/em> (jetty), a spa\/restaurant\/hotel called Seaside and an ice cream shop<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u00c4spet: long beach, calmer than T\u00e4ppet, no ice cream<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Favourite caf\u00e9 in \u00c5hus: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/klosterbagerietahus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Klosterbageriet<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Favourite Hotel: <a href=\"https:\/\/ahusseaside.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00c5hus Seaside<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back to Kristianstad&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to pronounce &#8220;Kristianstad&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While reading this guide you probably, every time the name &#8220;Kristianstad&#8221;, came to your eyes, you pronounced it like the name &#8220;Christian&#8221;, which is wrong. How it&#8217;s correctly pronounced, might surprise you&#8230; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When I heard Kristianstad for the first time<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once, when I was still living in V\u00e4xj\u00f6 (weirdly another town that&#8217;s hard to pronounce), talking to a Swedish girl who sat next to me during a university course at the university, I noticed she had a very different, slightly rough sounding dialect, typical for Swedes from the Southern region of Sk\u00e5ne. So I asked her where she was from. She replied with &#8230; a noise that to me sound something like that Kr&amp;%#?sta. I asked again, &#8220;sorry, what?&#8221;. &#8220;Kr&amp;%#?sta&#8221;. And I guess it was after the fourth time she gave up and &#8211; with a blend of amusement and annoyance &#8211;  turned to paper and pen in order to write it down for me KRISTIANSTAD. &#8220;Ahhhh&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">So let me help you out &#8230;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are not born in Sweden or have spent time in Southsweden, you probably pronounce it wrong. It&#8217;s pronounced <em>Kri-chan-stah<\/em>. Say it again, aloud, <em>Kri-CHAN-staahh<\/em>. It helps if you have some proficiency in Dutch or German. The &#8220;<em>chan<\/em>&#8220;-part sounds like the German <em>ch<\/em> in &#8220;lachen&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it&#8217;s been more than 15 years since I heard the name Kristianstad for the first time. And I still wonder why Swedes refuse to pronounce it &#8220;correctly&#8221; &#8230; the way it&#8217;s written. ;) <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fun fact about Kristianstad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kristianstad was founded by a Danish king, Christian IV. You see the &#8220;C4&#8221; signum everywhere in Kristianstad, for example on lamp posts in the city and many businesses have a C4 in their name. There&#8217;s even a school and shopping center called C4.
