Swedish Citizenship Test

New disclaimer (2026): This post was written in 2017, when there was absolutely no Swedish citizenship test on the horizon. Well, things have changed, and in Summer 2026 Sweden introduced one. What actual test questions are to be answered? … I don’t know. They are not publicly available at the moment, but you find some entertaining inspiration further below. Questions that might at least teach you something about Sweden and Swedish society, I hope. :)

Disclaimer: If you are looking to find useful information on how to receive the Swedish citizenship, this is not the right page for you. Below you will just find my underwhelming attempt to entertain you, in case you’re actually seriously trying to get a Swedish passport and need something to light you up for a few minutes. (Fake-) News from Sweden

A new citizenship test will be introduced by the Swedish government within the upcoming months, (according to unreliable sources).

Just recently, I received a classified document from a source called Viking-Leaks. The sender is a person called Julianne Buttange. (I assume the name is fake.) I opened the secret Word file, and, as it turned out, the document included the questions for an upcoming test that all imigrants have to pass in order to receive Swedish citizenship.

What is the Swedish national anthem called?

Du gamla, du fria – Thou ancient, Thou free

What is the name of the King of Sweden?

The correct answer is Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.
Most Swedes will also accept the answer Zlatan.

How often has Sweden won the European song contest?

    7 times: 1974, 1984, 1991, 1999, 2012, 2015, 2023

Are you allowed to publicly fika with someone?

    Yes.

(Of course you are. Swedes are open-minded people. You can see Swedes having a fika almost everywhere in public places.)

What is Kikki Danielsson’s main profession?

She is a Swedish country, dansband and pop singer.

(I have no idea why this might be an important question.)

Who assassinated the Minister of State, Olof Palme, on Friday, 28 February 1986?

There is no widely accepted answer to this question yet. Investigators say it was a guy called “Skandia mannen”. Only speculations.

(But Swedes still haven’t given up to believe that they will find out some day. If you happen to know who it was, please leave a comment below or send an email to Leif G. W. Persson.)

What kind of license is needed to give you permission to own and use a weapon called “osthyvel”?

    No license needed.

(According to Sweden’s constitution every Swede above the age of eight has the right to keep and bear an osthyvel.)

Which main ingredient do you have to buy, if you want to prepare köttbullar (meatballs)?

    Meat.

Which Swedish city is owned by IKEA?

    Älmhult.

(Swedes call it IKEA town. To be allowed to live in this enchanted city, at least one family member has to work for IKEA. Beware: IKEA’s own city police will regularly control your home to check whether you have bought furniture from another manufacturer. If you did, they’ll revoke your permission to receive free kanelbullar (cinnamon buns) at work. And, in more extreme cases, you are forced to pose as a model in the next IKEA catalogue. (Remeber this when you read it next time.))

When exactly do Swedes celebrate midsummer?

Midsummer’s eve is celebrated on a Friday between June 19 and June 25.

(All Swedes look forward to this event. So do all pharmaceutical companies that produce the morning-after pill.)
