They like to try everything that’s labeled “new”. Speaking in marketing terms, to be an innovation leader or early adopter is what many Swedes strive after.
A lot of Swedes have the latest iPhone, fast internet, fashion, societal values or diets. Reason: no one wants to be seen as outdated and not following the crowd. If everyone is going for the new, so do you.
Another reason why the eye contact avoiding Swedes were so quick to adapt smartphones might be, because they were a good excuse to avoid eye contact with others while sitting on the tunnelbana or waiting for the bus.
